Kingdom of Ambleion: Firearms

Perhaps not coming as a surprise, but the "tinker culture" of Ambleion jumped on the idea of creating firearms rather quickly. From backyard hobbyists, to "two blokes in a shed," many designs were submitted as soon as word came that Ambelion was merely going to attend the NEIGHTO Conference. Within 18 hours of the Technical Data Package for the Zhukov arriving in Ambleion, 7 different "hobbyist" variants were officially submitted to the Ambleion War Information Office. In the end, most arms would be produced at Henfield Lock, but several hobbyist designs would be produced for The Home Guard (the Ambleion Militia system) local units, resulting in Ambleion having the second most Zhukovs in inventory, and having at least three dozen small scale ammunition plants throughout the islands, some more complete than others.

Interestingly enough, this also led to the Ambleion Charter of Rights having an alteration made in 1004 C.S. that enumerated the responsibility of every Ambleionian to maintain arms for defense of the Kingdom. What was originally a responsiblity for the Head of the Household to maintain a "Blade, Bow, Arrows, Quiver and Accoutriments for 10 days campaign" turned into a responsibility to "maintain arms of modern design at no less than one weapon per responsible party, and no less than 120 rounds of ammunition, plus basic carrying equipment and rations for five days field duty."

The Henfield Hi-Power is the same as the Canidan "Inglis" save that it has a bar trigger for pony use. It even uses the same magazines. The design was originally made by Henfield, but the data package was given to Canida before the first units were produced, as Ambleion had a supply of Lee pistols as War Aid to work with, so, Earnest Lights Canada ended up manufacturing the base design first. The weapons are, in fact, so smiliar, that they can swap most parts between them. This is the standard pistol for the majority of Ambleonian forces.

The SIGW P291 is exclusively issued to NCO's of the Royal Horse Guards Regiment as a sidearm. As the RHGR is both the oldest and "most elite" line formation in the Ambleonian Army, they're often issued special armament in the first place. The design is of Germane origin, from the SIGW company, but the L11 is manufactured by Vickers-Armstrongs without alteration, with imported button-rifled barrels. On the larger side for a hoofgun, the L11 is also rather heavy, but well regarded for its precision and tight parts fitment, leading to excellent reliability.

The Lanchester SMG is an interesting adaptation of the Zhukov/Koenig series with the L7 rifle, using a shortened L7 stock to keep the weapon compact, with a Zhukov/Koenig action fitted into it. It's a bit heavy, but very functional. The Lanchester can accept the L7's spike bayonet, as well.

Ambleion's L7 Assault Rifle is a very conventionally laid-out rifle based on the last major Crossbow design used by the Ambleonian Army. The wood stock splits into three pieces to allow easier access to the internals, riding on steel rails. The casings eject out of the top of the weapon, and to the back-right. The bolt cocking lever is in the centre-rear, like the Sherman, that can be bitten and pulled back (again, like the Sherman). The L7 is unique in that it's the only major assault rifle fielded by a major NEIGHTO partner that was designed to have an optical sight installed by default. This 1.1x optical sight allows the user to hit targets at slightly longer ranges than other standard assault rifles, and as a result, Ambleonian soldiers receive extra marksmanship training to take advantage of this.

The L9 is an L7 with a Parker-Hail "Sparrow" Scope, a fixed 4.5x magnification scope that easily allows sharpshooters to reach out to over 700 meters. Ambleonian Snipers are trained harder than any other NEIGHTO partner nation, and are largely drawn from "bog hunters" from Scotland and other lowland areas, where crossbow hunting was common before the introduction of firearms.

Ambleon spearheaded the "NEIGHTO Light Sniper Standard" program, along with Equestria, Germaneigh, Roam, and Neighpon. This program sought to make a single standard sniper rifle round across all NEIGHTO forces. The Germane 7mm W-Kugel round was used as a benchmark of bare minimum performance from this new caliber, but greater velocity and terminal energy was desired, along with better armor penetration using standard tool steel as the penetrator instead of exotic materials like Tungsten. The result was the 8x60mm round. To fire it, the L7/L9 pattern was adapted into the L6. As it is a rechambered L7, it's a bit bulky, and rather a one-size-fits-all solution. As no extra mass was needed for the operating parts to withstand the 8x60mm round, recoil is a bit sharper.

Unlike other NEIGHTO powers, Ambleion's armed forces decided that a magazine-fed solution to the machine gun problem was preferable, especially after running the numbers on how much the NEIGHTO non-disintigrating metal linked belt would cost to produce, and how easily it could be damaged and lost. For roughly the same price, and greater usability, a flat pan magazine could be produced instead, which would also take advantage of clockmaker facilities in the country. The unique pan magazine of the Lewis comes in 48 and 96 round capacities, and fires at 720 rounds per minute, giving it roughly the same volume of fire as an Abrams or similar medium machine gun. The barrel cooling jacket is not strictly required, though highly advised when in static positions or in high ambient heat environments, to prevent barrel overheating. The jacket itself uses a forced air principle and is, in fact, so effective, that no barrel changes are required, even with sustained automatic fire.

This unusual weapon shows that, yet again, the Ambleonians love the L7 Rifle Stock. In this case, it's mated to the body of a Chaffee shotgun to create the "Greener" shotgun. Unusually, the "Greener" has a VERY strange adapter to it that cuts off the magazine, and replaces the barrel with a 14-gauge rifled barrel, designed for a totally unique cartridge, for which only less-than-lethal ammo was created. This strange chambering was made for H.M. Prisons and Jails, to arm guards with a non-lethal weapon that can still force long range pain compliance.
