Kingdom of Equestria: Warships (Royal Equestrian Navy)

Equestria, initially, did not have an armed Navy. The Royal Guard maintained a small fleet of small sailing vessels for search and rescue operations, and the Royal Yacht, a Schooner-sized vessel, for pleasure excursions. Constructing a fighting navy from the ground up, General K had to initially adapt to the shipbuilding capability of the kingdom as it existed. After the 2nd Attack on Canterlot, however, the Steel Fleet Program was pushed forwards, despite the technical limitations of existing shipbuilding industry. While steel ships could be made from the very beginning, they had no concept of how ship armor worked at the time, and could not have constructed a warship. Hence, an initial reduction in technological era to facilitate faster shipbuilding and allow for the warships themselves to be self-repairable in the field, instead of outright armored to withstand attacks.
Equestria has several major naval facilities, but the Navy itself is headquarted at Fillydephia Naval Yards, in Docksylvania. Other facilities include Baleston Naval Yards, Manehattan Naval Shipyards, and New Haven Naval Base. The Port of Mayaimi also has a dedicated set of docks for the Equestrian Navy that later became Saletine Naval Base.
Equestria uses the prefix "HMS" (Her Majesty's Ship) for its vessels. As Equestria is afforded the leading place in North Equus, all other nations with Royal governments use a prefix variant denoting their nation.

Equestria's first warships, the Bellerophon-class screw frigates did not serve for a very long time, as they were quickly superceded by the Steel Fleet Program. Parts of the original Bellerophons were used to create the follow-on steel Bellerophon-class Frigates, including the base frame and uprights, though all parts were replaced with steel.

The very first Carriers in existence on Equus, the Cloudsdale-class was rushed into service as rapidly as feasible, and was almost too large for initial construction. The Cloudsdale-class are true angled-deck carriers, allowing the launch and recovery of aircraft simulatinously. This makes them far and away vastly superior to anything available, limited only by the strength of her aircraft compliment. Initially, she was armed with 24 F/A-1 Falcons, which had limited striking ability, but were certainly better than nothing. Two special aircraft were created, the Nuclear-Armed "NB-1 Nightmare" (of which only two were initially made) and the revised C-1(R) Water Buffalo transport plane.

The crown jewel of the Steel Fleet, the Celestia-class battleships are based on no one specific ship design, but are generally designed after steel hull warships of the United States Navy circa 1880 - 1900. The color scheme is even similar to "The Great White Fleet" by default (though, for combat operations, a grey paintjob is applied). These large vessels have substantial striking power, but as Equestria "went first" in constructing a combat navy, most of her peers exceeded their designs by some measure, leading to the expansion of the Navy and construction of "The Modernized Fleet" by 1005 C.S.

The Canterlot-class armored cruisers would be a fine example of a late 19th Century warship on Earth. On Equus, they're the first of their kind. Boasting impressive firepower far in excess of similar ships of their Earthly era, the Canterlot-class vessels massively overmatch most of Tirek's cruiser types, most of which - until the sighting of the Steel Monitor at Alamo Island - had been mutant wooden ships-of-the-line. Even Tirek's more modern vessels, up to his Battleships and Gun Monitors, are inferior to this class in some way, as late as 1005 C.S., when the Canterlot-class was supplimented by the Konzas-class Heavy Cruisers.

Built up from a captured wooden ship of the line, the Moonlight was a testbed for several technologies. It became the Flagship of the Equestrian fleet, soon after recommissioning. While it has not served as General K or NEIGHTO's only flagship, it was designed as a command-and-control vessel first, a fighting cruiser second. It has higher speed than the Canterlot-class, but thinner armor over the decks and superstructure, save the Bridge and Combat Information Center, which are very thickly armored, to prevent easy incapacitation. The ship is intended to be used as a command vessel in fleet operations, both strategically, and tactically. It is also capable of being used as a special operations support vessel. The ship was originally named Princess of the Moon by the late Admiral Saletine, who was killed in battle defending Fillydelphia Harbor from a sneak attack by Tirek's fleet.

Sharing almost the same hull as the Canterlot-class cruisers, the Manehattan-class Protected Scout Cruisers have an even shallower draft when underloaded. Fast vessels, Torpedoes were added to them soon after completion, to give them a knock-out punch against ships above their weight class. When the "Modernized Fleet" was launched in 1005 C.S., modifications were done to the Manehattan-class to give it some anti-aircraft ability, which called for removing the side-by-side single 95mm guns, and replacing them with quadruple 25mm AAA guns.

When the wooden Bellerophons were determined to be "not nearly enough ship," it was decided to move forward with the Steel Fleet. The first four Bellerophon II's are "the same ships" as the wooden screw frigates, in that they were brought into drydock and modified piece-by-piece into this form, essentially creating all new vessels. Wood from the Screw Frigates was used to furnish and deck the Steel ones, and excess wood was used on other vessels as needed. All ships after F-04, are entirely new construction. The Bellerophons were later supplimented by the Heroes-class Modern Fleet Frigates.

The diminutive Alpha Corvettes were designed to provide both close protection for larger vessels, and as a method to insert special operations teams (of COURSE this mainly consisting of General K and his staff). The torpedo armament gives them some ability to fight off or damage larger vessels, while the 95mm main guns can take any of their peers or rival vessel types. The original HMS Alarm was piece-by-piece modified into this vessel type and served as the class prototype, after its caputre from Tirek at Carousel Island, and after the Steel Fleet Program was initiated. These vessels are not without controversy, as an incident involving four of them led to a Court Martial after the Battle of Fillydelphia Harbor.

Limitations of the initial supertructure layout led the remaining Cloudsdale-class Carriers to be built to a modified design, and Cloudsdale herself to undergo a refit to bring it up to specfications. Addition of the S-2 Owl and F/A-2 Hawk finally gave the ships the striking power they needed to carry out both heavy anti-ship and anti-land operations, and a fighter compliment that could intercept enemy air assets easily. As with all "capital ships" in Equestria's fleet, it comes ready to be used as a Force Flagship, with an existing space at the lower part of the tower superstructure for a staff of up to 90 personnel, with private state rooms for flag officers, a banquet hall for dignitaries, and bunks for the lower ranks, with a planning area, separate armory, and equipment rooms.

HMS Hermes was sunk in harbor at the Battle of Athens. A new "Supercarrier" was designated to replace her.

Almost as large as the Yamato-class battleships of Neighpon, the Rainbow of Light class Fast Battleships represent the pinnacle of battleship technology. With a dozen 16-inch guns each firing what amounts to a Ford Escort packed with high explosives, and erasing an area the size of a tennis court when they hit, the weight-of-shell alone allows one Rainbow of Light to easily overmatch two of Tirek's smaller battleships. The impressive AAA armament is more than enough to counter Tirek's air threats as well. The only thing it lacks is anti-submarine protection, requiring it to be escorted at all times. However, in the open ocean, it can simply sail away from offending Subs with its impressive 34 knot top speed. With the HMS Moonlight retired from active service, the Rainbow of Light class ships were all outfitted to act as Force Flagships, with accomodations for General K and up to 60 staff, with their own private war room, quarters, and mess hall.
The HMS Weather Rock was sunk at the Battle of the Mareterranian Sea, along with fleet commander Vice Admiral Whitecap, and her captain, Northern Star. She was to be replaced by HMS Flashstone, but construction was cancelled and the name and hull number reassigned, after the loss of HMS Sunstone at the Battle of Athens.

HMS Luna was severely damaged at the Battle of Fillydelphia Harbor. As a result, she required significant reconstruction. The decision was made to modify her, rather than restore her, to address some design limitations discovered after she was originally commissioned. This included upgrading from Mk. II to Mk. III 12-inch gun turrets, to addressed cramped conditions, deleting the 8-inch secondary armament in favor for long range 5-inch guns, partial replacement of her boiler arrangement, replacement of her flat-headed propellers for conical propellers, and replacement of the cramped "cone" superstructure with a modern rectangular one (with the uppermost level retained as a Flying Bridge). Eventually, Cadence would be similarly modified, but both Celestia and Shining Armor would be reclassified as Coast Patrol Battleships (PCB) Summer Solstice and Radiant Shield to free up the names. After modification, it was decided to reclassify them as Battlecruisers, not Battleships. Additionally, Luna was reconstructed to function as a Flagship, with a dedicated space near the Combat Information Center for General K, a staff of up to 30 in private quarters, and a planning room attached to the CIC itself. Cadence has this same section set aside for coordinating landing operations, with additional communications equipment.

Because her barbettes were not the same size as the Mk. IV 8-inch turret, only one turret could be mounted forwards. However, her number of total guns (8) remains the same, as the forward and rearmost turrets are triples, and the second-to-rear ("X" Turret) is a dual. The boat deck was significantly modified to carry more small boats, increasing her compliment greatly, and allowing her to land all her Marines in one go. Maresechusetts was also modified to this design later on. Canterlot was laid up after issues were found with her engines, and turned into a Midshipony Training Vessel (IX-01) by War Day 900. Erie and Coltifornia were modified to a slightly different design layout as Anti-Aircraft Cruisers. Docksylvania and Greenbroke were modified slightly, and turned into Coastal Patrol Cruisers (PCC) as HMS Keystone and HMS Green Mountain respectively, to free up the names.

A fully modernized Heavy Cruiser, the Konzas-class is a very heavy hitter, with 10 8-inch guns, scout planes, and depth charges. Its top speed is excellent as well, making it ton-for-ton a peer or better to anything Tirek started deploying by War Day 850. Interestingly, the port-to-starboard full hangar can actually hold all 6 scout planes if needed, or with one on each of the Port and Starboard pads, it has enough extra room in the hangar for another 24 Marines with equipment, or various other stores as needed for specific missions. This includes reducing the aircraft compliment to two and reorganizing the Hangar into a Flagship arrangement, with bunks for up to 90 staff, a small kitchen, a planning area, and more. The Konzas-class also has the first proper sonar set - the Mark IA Sound Detection Device - installed on board, the principles of which were familiar to Equestria already, and this and the anti-sub weapons installed out of an abundance of caution - that paid off after General K was sent to the Dutch East Indies and encountered Tirek's first submarines.
HMS Ozarka was lost at the Battle of the Mareterranian Sea when a battleship-caliber shell hit her hangar deck while fuel and munitions were unsecured and vulnerable, causing a massive fire that ended with her magazines detonating. She was to be replaced by HMS Sequoyah and HMS Yellowstone, but the ships were cancelled after the destruction at the Battle of Athens. A whole new class was designed instead.

Erie and Coltifornia were modified to a slightly different design layout as Anti-Aircraft Cruisers, from the initial Canterlot-class armored cruisers, following the modification of Neighvada, and the general realization that the "Steel Fleet" as originally comissioned, were not up to par any longer. Rather than scrap the vessels, or assign all of them to CoastaL Prtection duties, a few were modified to alternative designs, with Erie and Coltifornia experimentally converted to Anti-Aircraft Cruisers in preparation for the inevitability that Tirek's forces start using aircraft, or large bomb-equipped Raptorians in greater numbers. The extremely heavy long and medium range AAA armament meant that even with a boiler replacement, they'd be slower than the Neighvadas. However, when the entire fleet is cruising at ~25kts, the Erie and Coltifornia can easily move about to cover the fleet with AAA protection. Its 5-inch guns do good service on smaller vessels as well. However, it lacks both torpedo armament, and anti-sub weapons.

A truly modern, fleet ready Light Cruiser, the Kichai-class represents the definitive structure of the Light Cruiser, with 12 Anti-Ship 6-inch guns, and 10 dual-purpose 5-inch guns. Its anti-aircraft compliment is also impressive, and it has both Scout Planes and boats. A very much "do-all" cruiser, its top speed makes it attractive for hit-and-run attacks, and it does have the ability to support a small beach landing. In every way, the Kichai-class is superior to its predecessors, in the Manehattan-class. The addition of gyroscopically stabilized torpedoes also means that the Kichai-class ships can snipe enemy vessels at longer ranges with more assurance of a clean hit.
HMS Okemos was lost at the Battle of the Mareterranian Sea after intercepting a torpedo attack meant for HMS Weather Rock - and while she destroyed the Destroyers that launched the attack, she was later set upon by one of the remaining enemy battleships, after HMS Weather Rock was hit in the Bridge and lost her command officers, once again protecting the Flagship. She was to be replaced by HMS Sequoyah City and HMS Cheyenne, but the ships were cancelled after the destruction at the Battle of Athens. A whole new class was designed instead.

When the Las Pegasus and Baleston were damaged in the Battle of Fillydelphia Harbor, their reconstruction was somewhat eclectic at first, with efforts to simply restore then to their former condition with spare parts so they could participate in the Neighpon Campaign, though these repairs were never finalized. Eventually, Baleston was heavily reconstructed after it was found that shock damage from shell impacts had fractured several internal structural members (themselves victims of rapid production - they had undetected flaws). Las Pegasus, still under repair, was then certified to undergo the same modifications, though Baleston was finished first. When it was agreed that the older designed Scout Cruisers were no longer peer equivalent, they were modified into Force Protection Cruisers with a focus on anti-aircraft and anti-submarine armament, to make them useful to the fleet. Manehattan, Fillydelphia, and Syracuse were not modified, and were redesignated as Coastal Protection Cruisers Gotham, Brother and Luxaquae to free up their names.
HMS Las Pegasus and HMS Baleston were lost at the Battle of the Mareterranian Sea. HMS Las Pegasus lost her forward guns in the battle and was eventually sunk by enemy torpedoes. HMS Baleston was damaged amidships in her engine spaces by enemy gun fire, and slowed. Trapped out of range of enemy cruiser guns, she was worked over from a distance and sunk after absorbing 24 medium caliber shells, 2 torpedoes, and over 30 smaller caliber shots. As a result of the now-apparent armor vulnerability at their engine spaces, the remaining Anti-Air Cruisers of the now-Martingalier class were all retired from front line service, and assigned to protect the Amphibious Assault Groups instead.

The modernized follow-on to the conversions of the Erie class, the Reino class are named for secondary cities represented by the heavy cruisers named for states that are already commissioned. These were desgined and brought to service to suppliment the Erie class for one of the Carrier Battle Groups, and the Amphibious Warfare Groups. These are shorter, but built on the same hullform, as the Kichai class, and are very nimble vessels as a result, with a VERY large AAA armament. They have no Torpedoes, but do have Depth Charges, making them very effective "force protection cruisers."
HMS Tussle and HMS Riverton were to be constructed to replace HMS Las Pegasus and HMS Baleston, however, after the loss of HMS Marechester and HMS Buffalo at the Battle of Athens, it was agreed that an entirely new class of ship should be constructed instead.

A captured ship is just the right ship for a Pirate. Captain Rainbow McSherbet, once known as The Gentleman Pirate, the Party Priate, and the Priate of Bullies, captured this ship on behalf of Equestria during the extended Marelantis Incident. During the Vulpesylvanian Campaign, the Vulpine dockyards retrofitted her with salvaged equipment from sunken vessels, and some gear brought over from the reinforcement teams that came to assist. By the time the NEIGHTO phase of the conflict ended, HMS Bounty was ready. It served as General K and CAG's personal ship, much the smae way K's Command Train served CAG on land. While very lightly armed, it's very maneuverable, and has a relatively high top speed. It's an excellent ship for raiding duties - and that's exactly the style of warfare her captain prefers.

With the sinking of the Bellerophon at the Battle of Fillydelphia Harbor, the upcoming "Bravo" class was given the name. An evolution, actually, of the "Alpha" or "A-Class" Corvettes (which were all surplussed to coastal defense duties), the third installment of the legendary "Bellerophon" name sports a rather hefty anti-ship, and anti-sub armament, and decent anti-air protection for a ship its size, combined with a thin hull and a tight turning radius, making it an excellent ship to screen the fleet with, or act as an escort to larger vessels.
HMS Bucker was lost with almost all hands at the Battle of the Mareterranian Sea after executing a torpedo attack led by HMS Braeburn Apple-Skies. She was singled out by the enemy fleet and swamped with shell fire that eventually caused both fore and aft magazines to detonate, and her engines. She was replaced by HMS Bustup, HMS Bonfire, and HMS Bardiche

Needing some way to transport Amphibious Assault Vehicles, the Haltimer County-class can carry two full Regiments of troops, in addition to enough landing craft to land the entire compliment in one go, plus some. The Haltimer County-class also has a landing pad for an S-2 Owl, which might be assigned to the ship, or it might be left open for personnel transfers for flag officers. While the Haltimer County-class doesn't have the facilties to act as a landing operations flagship, it does have a very expansive command and control communications center, to receive such instructions. HMS Cadence is, however, designed to coordinate landings, though this could be done from any Flagship-outfitted vessel.

The three largest NEIGHTO Vessels - 35 meters longer than the tremendous "H-Klasse" of Germaneigh - the true Angled-Deck Supercarriers of the Hearts-class are named for the three identified "elemental Hearts" of Equus. Gigantic, these floating air bases can stand up to any Earth counterpart vessel of the same era, both in air wing, and in capability. Without the requirement to use steam catapults, the Equestrain Supercarriers can launch strike wings of 12 aircraft at a time, and recover them continuously. With the four aircraft elevators, planes can be quickly re-armed and re-fuelled below decks. While early Surface-to-Air Missiles were available at the time of her construction, they were not added for lack of space. This forces them to rely on their escorts for long range air defense, and their own Combat Air Patrol. For that, the new F-3 Eagle was created, as a pure Fighter/Interceptor aircraft. All of her Anti-Air Batteries are Radar-Directed and Computer-controlled.

Constructed as back-up escorts for Amphibious Assault Groups, additions to fleet Combat Air Patrols, or suppliments to Strike packages, the Light Carriers of Equestria were even more heavily worked than the Supercarriers, as they often found themselves supplimenting the Cloudsdale-class carriers, then performing whatever other air missions were available, and needed, that a full Carrier couldn't be risked for or tasked to. Often lightly protected by - as standard - two Light Cruisers and two Frigates, the Light Aircraft Carriers depended almost wholly on their aircraft to get the job done. Their value as pure Helicopter Carriers wasn't lost on Navy strategists, either, leading to their other nickname - "Commando Carriers," for their use in inserting special operations raid teams and protecting them with light air support.

With all of the new technology and weapons systems available, the two surviving battleships of the Rainbow of Light-class were upgraded as best as possible. Now a sort of crossover platform, they have a secondary weapon suite identical to the Shining Armor-class Battlecruisers, a primary weapon suite similar to the Flashstone-class, no Surface-to-Surface Missiles, but identical helicopters to both classes. Doctrine calls for the six Surface Fleets of Equestria to have at least two Battleships or Battlecruisers available to them. So, these are usually paired. Of note, the Rainbow of Light and Elevated Eminence are the only two Battleship types that retain their Assault Boats. They form "Battleship Division 1."

A direct upgrade to the excellent Rainbow of Light-class battleships, the improved Flashstone-class has a very similar weapon suite as the more economical Shining Armor-class Battlecruisers. Adding a suite of Guided Missiles, the Guided Missile Battleships can strike static targets up to 50nmi inland, with a CEP of 5 meters on static targets with proper targeting information. While the ships pre-date satellites, the use of observation helicopters, gyroscopic missile guidance, and television signal control for termina phase targeting, allows the BGM-1 Crossbow to be incredibly effective against things like airfields, bunkers, and other static objects of great value. While they lack the maneuverablility to target fast-moving ships, docked vessels or those moving at slow speeds, can be hit effectively. The 16-inch guns have a range of 21 nautical miles, and can deliver a 1230kg Super-Heavy AP projectile with up to 70% hit probability on moving targets. The vessels of this class can also function as Fleet Flagships, and have extensive tactical and strategic command-and-control facilities. Together, these vessels make up "Battleship Divison 2" and "Battleship Division 3."

When the Equestrian Naval 12-Inch Gun Project was completed, Equestria had a naval rifle 4 inches smaller in diameter than the main battleship naval rifles, but with almost the same range (21 nmi for the 16" guns, 19 nmi for the 12" guns). This, combined with the availability of guided missiles, and the new generation of helicopters, made it more economically viable, and faster, to construct 6 Guided Missile Battlecruisers instead of more Fast Battleships of the Flashstone-class. Outfitted to serve as Fleet Flagships, the ships of the class have an incredible over-the-horizon punch with the BGM-1 'Crossbow' SSM. While technically capable of targeting very slow moving warships, the SSM was intended to hit shore batteries that would otherwise out-range the 12-inch guns, or provide a first strike option on enemy airfields for a combat fleet. The Crossbow has an effective "cruise missile-like" range of 92.6km/50 nmi against static targets, and an effective range of just 25 nmi/46.3km against ships, as it relies on the warship's radars to paint the target. Obviously, the closer the vessel is, the better it can be targeted. However, the BGM-1 has very poor maneuvering, so, only the slowest or longest vessels can be effectively targeted. As these vessels are to be paired, they're arranged into Battlecruiser Divisions 1 to 3.

Modernized all over again, the Konzas-class Heavy Cruisers were modified heavily with Guided Missiles, including a single rack of ASROC. The next class, the "National Class" cruisers, would have two side-by-side launchers at the edges of the deck, giving it twice the ASuW offensive power, and in a better position to launch, when it comes to steering the ship in battle. The Cruisers were also given helicopters, but due to the design of the ship constricting the superstrucutre, the helicopter elevator doesn't have a hangar deck below it, just the usual armored shutter that closes over it, meaning the alloted space for it is smaller, but more well protected, and the aircraft can be rearmed and refuelled very quickly, since the entire space is all around the elevator, a surprisngly efficient arrangement. As good as these ships were, however, the "National" Cruisers were just that much better in every way, and these ships, along with the refitted Reino-class were eventually replaced before the war ended by the Flight II "National Cruisers." HMS Coltorado was not given a refit, and for a time, served with the "Extra Fleet" in its original design layout, until it was replaced by the Flight II National Cruiser HMS Skyros (CG-61).

Rarely does one size fit all, but in this case, creating the first true Guided Missile Cruiser that bridges the coverage gap between Heavy and Light cruisers, with extensive missile armament, AAA protection, anti-ship weapons, the excellent 155mm Automatic Gun, and advancements in radar, with a pair of helicopters for support, the "National" Guided Missile Cruiser became the best answer to many, many tactical and strategic questions. To the poitn that a slightly revised "Flight II" was made a bit later, to simple replace the remaining Heavy and Light Cruisers in service, and give the Equestrian Navy one VERY big Swiss Army Knife of weapon, coverage, escort, and even Flagship options. With six full fleets each needing eight cruisers, this plus the modified versions of the classes that came before, covered the gap. Every shipyard in Equestria participated in this program, to the point where ships would get hulls, engines, and basic framework at one, then be towed or piloted to another for fitting out, to maximize the number of slipways.

The differences between Flight I and Flight II are small - the addition of a new type of long range IFF detector with zenith search function, and a 5-meter extension to the aft for better helicopter stowage. The modernized Guided Missile Cruisers derived from the Reino-class Anti-Aircraft Cruisers are incredibly modernized, with computerization taking over for manual gun laying, and even the main guns being fully automated. The 155mm Automatic Gun can also be used on aircraft, and is actually better than the Equestrian 5-inch Automatic Guns. However, the deck space required for the 155mm Guns makes them unsuited to anything but main gun status. The RIM-2 Torrent Guided Missiles have a range of 18.75nmi, combined with the 15nmi and 30rm rate of fire 155mm Guns, provides incredible anti-air protection for the fleet. The sonar-guided torpedoes provide excellent answers to capital ships, and the UUR-1 rockets can even target submarines. The new Reinos are fantastic force protection light cruisers as a result.

Designed to be a minimally invasive upgrade, the modifications to this class added a single Anti-Air Missile Launcher, and upgraded all the weapon systems. This ended up adding more weight than desired, and slowed the ships down. As a result, as the newer Bitta Luck-class became available, these were relegated to shore protection, convoy escort, and other secondary duties. They remain powerful fleet units, but not nearly as decisive as the follow-on class.

The purpose-made Guided Missile Destroyers of the Eqeustrian Fleet can do everything the later ABC-Type Frigates can do, more or less all in one place. As such, they're considerably useful as general purpose escorts for fleets, and for amphibious assault vessels. With the former Alpha-class Corvettes relegated to convoy escorts over a year before their arrival, any "extra" vessels from the preceeding refit Heroes I-class get assigned to Convoy and secondary duties, while these vessels are pushed to the front lines, of which 24 were needed. The additional Destroyers of this class were assigned to the 6 Amphibious Assault Groups at 4 each, with the last eight assigned various reserve duties, or placed in two Destroyer Flotillas and deployed ahead as a ship reserve.

The Bravo-class Frigates were updated with a short range AA Missile, rapid fire 3-inch guns, and 20mm Gatlings, along with the all-valuabe ASROC Launcher. While Tirek's submarines were never as big of a threat to NEIGHTO fleets as NEIGHTO subs were to Tirek's, they were still a threat, and often acted in groups, with one sub as Bait, and another one or two acting as the shooters. This made Tirek subs an ever-present threat, even if modern NEIGHTO Anti-Sub Weapons were more than their match. If nothing else, Tirek subs could deny sea passage or require escort when otherwise they may not be needed, sometimes tying down units that could have come in handy elsewhere. The Bustup, Bonfire, and Bardiche were actually finished to this design, before the creation to the follow-on ABC-class Frigates.

The "A" Type of the ABC Frigates is designed as a submarine killer, with its ASROC system and a large number of reloads. While it does have a single Air Defense Missile, the RIM-3 Tear is short ranged, and best used against single aircraft, or in combination with the rest of the air defense weapons, against smaller groups. It does have the capability to contribute to the air defense grid when needed, however. All three classes have a helipad on the back, and a hangar capable of handling one helicopter, usually for sub-hunting or SAR missions.

The "B" Type Anti-Aircraft Frigates are the second element to the ABC Frigate Plan. With cruiser-level AA Missiles, the Barnsdall-class can help the National Cruisers with a further-out AA Screen as picket boats, or rush in close to a Carrier or Battleship to aide in termal stage defense. It has a modest Anti-Sub armament, but the same excellent Sonar as the rest of the class type, giving it an anti-sub option if one's needed.

The "C" Type to the triad, the Clevenger-class Frigates are the ship killers. Six racks of Sonar-guided anti-ship torpedoes, an extra 3-inch gun, while still providing some Anti-Sub punch and some Anti-Air long range ability. The "C" Type ships, however, were designed to dicate the pace of battle with a surface combatant, with its high speed, and fast-firing gun systems if the ship needs to get close, or stand-off and launch Torpedoes at ranges of up to 12 nautical miles, at a speed of 46 knots. The 457mm SGT uses both passive acoustic homing, and active sonar homing for the terminal phase. It has a tendency to dive down when it reaches the last part of the terminal phase, and break a target ship's back. It can track targets traveling at up to 24 knots very easily, and is still capable against targets traveling at 30 knots, the normal maximum speed of Tirek's warships.

The Silent Service of the Equestrian Navy are these fine vessels of incredible endurance. Able to sail the world's oceans without refuelling, the attack submarines and their crews were officially the Equestrian 7th Fleet (Submarine), but broken up into Wolf Packs of 4 and assigned to operations in tandem with surface fleets, alongside them, or in support. It wasn't unusual to see a pair of Subs attached directly to a surface fleet, while the other 2 from its Pack were ranging far away, hunting for enemy subs.

The Four Horses of the Apocalypse, the four Eclipse-class submarines were designed specifically as a "Fail Deadly" or deadman's switch in the event that Tirek had somehow gained victory everywhere else. Each Submarine was loaded with 12 ICBM's, each UGM-1 "Skyshatter" ICBM contained a single 2.5MT "Daybreaker" nuclear warhead. The intended use would be up to the ship's captain upon receipt of "Signal Black" - either attack Tirek's continent with their missiles, or attack whatever they suspect to be Tirek's last known position - even if it meant Canterlot itself. All crew were volunteers, including the "Apocalypse Commodore" - Sea Swirl, a personal friend of General K, who commanded the Daybreaker Task Force. Fortunately, they would never be used.
