My Little Pony: Warfare is Magic

Herdiet Union: Firearms

Herdiet doctrine is very similar to Soviet doctrine fron Earth, save that their society thrives on gradual conquest, and brutality within the Regime is far, far more excessive. Weapons technology, until K the Human arrived on Equus, was focused on hydraulics and springs, and a means to project bolts of various size further distances, with greater precision. When they discovered firearms, they already had the technical knowledge of advanced weaponcraft, and set about making their own designs based on K's principles and basic inventions. Unlike Equestria, the Herdiets HAD been successful in refining the Eastern Bloc pistol powder formula into something more suitable for rifles, and immediately took off with it. By the time K was captured by the Herdiets almost exactly one year after the Attack on Canterlot, and over two years since the Sherman started low rate initial production, the Herdiets had firearms for every occasion, including true Heavy Machine Guns, and even Machine Pistols - something K had not developed at all! As a result of espionage, however, Herdiet weapons designs were leaked to the Collective Khyangese Republic, and these weapons were copied with some basic alterations.

Pistol, Turonov Model 1871 (PT-71)
WEAPON TYPE: Double Action Semi-Automatic Pistol
CALIBER: 7.92x24mm
CAPACITY: 8 rounds
EFFECTIVE RANGE: 40 meters
BARREL LENGTH: 98mm/3.85 inches
OVERALL LENGTH: 178mm/7 inches
OVERALL HEIGHT: 140mm/5.51 inches
TOTAL MASS: 1.8lbs/0.81kg
The pistol for Officers, KSVB, Militsiya, and Administrative personnel, the PT-71 is really only good at close range, but the 7.92x24mm cartridge does have some decent power behind it. The PT-71 is small, easily hoofed, and dead simple, meaning its as reliable as a brick and about as ergonomic as one. But, it gets the job done and done pretty well. It's similar to the Equestrian Lee pistol, but more resembles a Ponyfied Earth Makarov.

Pistol, Automatic, Sverdlosk Model 1872 (APSv-72)
WEAPON TYPE: Machine Pistol
CALIBER: 7.92x24mm
CAPACITY: 24 rounds
EFFECTIVE RANGE: 50 meters (point target),
100 meters (area target)
BARREL LENGTH: 140mm/5.51 inches
OVERALL LENGTH: 232mm/9.13 inches
OVERALL HEIGHT: 160mm/18.34 inches
TOTAL MASS: 3lbs/1.36kg
A purely Herdiet invention, the APSv-72 Machine Pistol adds a GREAT DEAL of firepower to an individual's hoof. However.. predictably.. the grip field of Earth and Pegasi are not sufficient to keep hold of this thing on full automatic for long, without practice, training, and concentration. The safety lever is nice and long, though the weapon lacks a slide lock. For disassembly, the slide is pulled halfway back with the teeth, and the safety lever is pulled up, then out, to separate the slide from the frame. Shells eject almist straight up, slightly back and to the right, giving a "brass shower" to anyone standing nearby.

Pistol Machine Gun, Sverdlosk Model 1871 (PPSv-71)
WEAPON TYPE: Sub-Machine Gun
CALIBER: 7.92x24mm
CAPACITY: 71 rounds drum magaizne, 32 rounds "stick" magazine
EFFECTIVE RANGE: 150 meters
BARREL LENGTH: 270mm/10.62 inches
OVERALL LENGTH: 770mm/30.13 inches
OVERALL HEIGHT: 212mm/8.34 inches (drum magazine)
TOTAL MASS: 7.73lbs/3.5kg
The immediate follow-on to the SVK-71 rifle, the PPSv-71 prooved that fully automatic weapons were a battlefield asset. With its long barrel, and almost rifle size, it's much larger than the Equestrian Ridgway or Zhukov, but boasts a fairly impressive range. Unlike Equestria, Herdiet "pistol" ammunition is actually loaded to near-rifle pressures, meaning the 6.5 gram standard ball 7.92x24mm round travels 500 m/s, and generates 815 joules of muzzle energy.. from the APSv-72 Pistol. From the PPSv-72, this goes up to 600m/s and 1175 joules, or about 90% of the muzzle energy of the old Sherman rifles. From a sub-machine gun.

Automatic Rifle, Kilmet, Model 1872 (AK-72)
WEAPON TYPE: Assault Rifle
CALIBER: 7.92x44mm
CAPACITY: 30 rounds detachable box magazine
EFFECTIVE RANGE: 200 meters
BARREL LENGTH: 388mm/15.27 inches
OVERALL LENGTH: 868mm/34.17 inches
OVERALL HEIGHT: 232mm/9.13 inches (drum magazine)
TOTAL MASS: 8.18lbs/3.71kg
Essentially a pony-fied AKM-47, the AK-72 has similar ergonomics, and similar reliability. The round used, the 7.92x44mm, has a very slight wounding potential over the 7x40mm NEIGHTO round, but they use the same bullet weights. The AK-72's round simply travels about 50m/s faster. The range envelope is the same, precision is somewhat less, and the weight is slighltly higher. Overall, it's a very good assault rifle, and a perfect rival to its Equestrian counterpart.

Semi-Automatic Rifle, Kilmet Model 1871 (SVK-71)
WEAPON TYPE: Battle Rifle (Semi-Automatic)
CALIBER: 7.92x52mm
CAPACITY: 10 rounds
EFFECTIVE RANGE: 300 meters
BARREL LENGTH: 390mm/15.35 inches
OVERALL LENGTH: 820mm/32.28 inches
OVERALL HEIGHT: 194mm/7.63 inches
TOTAL MASS: 8.82lbs/4kg
Unlike the Equestrian Sherman, which was designed to be fully automatic from the start, the SVK-71 was not given a sear override to allow it to fire on full automatic. This was strictly done to conserve ammunition in the early days of fielding firearms to the Herdiet troops, who were engaged in warfare in two regions, against a determined resistance force. The SVK-71 was the Herdiet Union's experiment to see if firearms were worthwhile. Immediately successful, but now desiring fully automatic ability, the SVK-71 was phased out as the front line primary rifle for the AK-72, and most SVK-71's were given scopes, to be used as Precision Rifles, as the SVKM-72.

Semi-Automatic Rifle, Kilmet, Modified, Model 1872 (SVKM-72)
WEAPON TYPE: Precision Rifle
CALIBER: 7.92x52mm
CAPACITY: 10 rounds
EFFECTIVE RANGE: 400 meters
BARREL LENGTH: 390mm/15.35 inches
OVERALL LENGTH: 820mm/32.28 inches
OVERALL HEIGHT: 194mm/7.63 inches
TOTAL MASS: 8.82lbs/4kg
With a scope added, and weapons for this project selected for especially tight groupings ("select-grade" barrels), the SVK-71 evolved into the SVKM-72. The rifle is expected to hit at less than 2.5MOA (or, no more than a 3-inch circle from point-of-aim at 100 yards, or 1mrad) and as such, can effectively engage a pony-sized target out to 400 meters with the 4.7x scope supplied.

Light Automatic Gun, Dostoy, Model 1872 (SVKM-72)
WEAPON TYPE: Light Machine Gun
CALIBER: 7.92x44mm
CAPACITY: 70 Round Drum Magazine
EFFECTIVE RANGE: 200 meters (point target), 400 meters (area target)
BARREL LENGTH: 488mm/19.21 inches
OVERALL LENGTH: 980mm/38.58 inches
OVERALL HEIGHT: 266mm/10.47 inches
TOTAL MASS: 11.7lbs/5.2kg
Having the same doctrinal mission as the Abrams and Merrill in Equestria, the RPD-72 doesn't reinvent the wheel, but instead, turns the base AK-72 assault rifle into a Light Machine Gun (technically a Squad Automatic Weapon, since it's not actually belt fed). The brusque 600 rounds-per-minute rate of fire means the barrels do heat up after sustained use, but the weapon itself is durable enough to withstand up to 25 magazines rapid-changed on full automatic before failure, with 11 magazines rapid-changed cited on its diagram as the maximum suggested during sustained firing.

Machine Gun, Kilmet-Dostoy, Model 1871 (KDP-71 Heavy Machine Gun)
WEAPON TYPE: Heavy Machine Gun, Wheeled Mount
CALIBER: 7.92x52mm
CAPACITY: Non-Disintegrating Metal Link Belt, various size ammo cans
EFFECTIVE RANGE: 400 meters (point target),
800 meters (area target)
BARREL LENGTH: 440mm/17.32 inches
OVERALL LENGTH: 1 meter/3.28 feet
OVERALL HEIGHT: 466mm/18.34 inches
TOTAL MASS: 37lbs/16.8kg
The KDP-71 coincidentally resembles the Maxim Machine Gun used by the Soviet Union in World War II, right down to the small wheeled mount. This heavy monster is, of course, too large to carry. The huge water jacket allows the weapon to sustain its 540-round-per-minute rate of fire indefinitely, as long as the water holds out. The 7.92x52mm round has incredibly good range, and good precision. The Herdiets discovered that if the barrel rifling in the KDP-71 was cut shallow, and "softened" at the tip of the barrel, they could achieve a wide fire dispersal without having to slide the weapon back and forth, making it far easier to use as an area denial weapon. Indeed, it shoots about 6-8 MOA, compared to an Equestrian Bradley, that shoots about 3.

Rocket Explosive Launcher, Model 1872 (RVP-72)
WEAPON TYPE: Rocket Propelled Grenade Launcher
VARIANT MARKS: No official variant marks
CALIBER: 40/100mm
CAPACITY: 1 Round
EFFECTIVE RANGE: 150 meters
BARREL LENGTH: 1 meter/3.28 feet
OVERALL LENGTH: 1 meter/3.28 feet
OVERALL HEIGHT: 220mm/8.66 inches
TOTAL MASS: 7lbs/3.2kg
An up-scaled Walker launcher with license taken with its visual design, the RVP-72 also includes an optic sight. It has longer range than a Walker, and can out-range a lot of Equestrian ground weapons. The fuse is an impact type, and the rocket has a shaped charge capable of penetrating up to 275mm (10.8 inches) of hardened armor plate.

Handheld Grenade, Diavalov, Model 1872 (RGD-72)
WEAPON TYPE: Grenade
OVERALL LENGTH: 164mm/6.45 inches (storage)
OVERALL HEIGHT: 56mm/2.2 inches (with fragmentation jacket)
TOTAL MASS: 1.11lbs/0.5kg
Another innovation that Equestria did not get to first, the RGD-72 "Snout Grenade" is designed to be gripped in the mouth by the handle, snapped open, and heaved with a neck-whip. Ranges in testing exceeded 50 meters. It has a blast radius of 2 meters without the fragmentation jacket, and 7.5 meters with the jacket added. Without the fragmentation jacket, it acts like a concussion grenade, and can stun enemy troops with the blast and overpressure. Equestria later copied these identically, as did most other NEIGHTO and Herdintern Pact nations.

Note that the graphic above is NOT at the same scale as the firearms (1:2 Scale), but at 1:1 Scale (1 pixel = 1mm) - this was done to show greater detail on this small of an object.
