Unusually for most aircraft, the machine guns are under the fuselage, and peek out from a rounded casemate. The AA.4 is based on the AA.2, but redesigned for aircraft use, with a different belt feed mechanism. The Dewoitine 25mm automatic cannon was offered to the Navy, but turned down, as they feared it might be underpowered, and they went with a dual 55mm gun system instead, similar to the Roaman 57mm. As a result, the cannons were used on Prench aircraft instead. The intakes at the ends of each wing are a forced air cooling system. The cockpit is unusual in that it slides forwards and up, and the pilot slightly reclines inside. There is only room for one pony. Bouyancy is totally neutral with a pilot and a full load of machine gun and cannon ammunition, or with no cannon ammunition, and the internal bomb bay loaded with two depth charges. Only the Prench carriers have the full sized 300kg depth charges available, as a fully loaded 402 requires a running start to take off. The internal hardpoint has a removable cover that is not attached when the hard point(s) are loaded. |
