Roaman Empire: Warships (Marina del Regno)

Roam is very proud of their navy, and while not nearly as disciplined as the Germane fleet, their ships were always large, visually impressive, and even beautiful in their own way. A great deal of ceremony, pomp-and-circumstance, and dog-and-pony shows went along with this, despite Roam losing its last major war against the former Ottoman Empire. However, this has led the rest of the European nations with a bad impression of Roam's military - that of a "force of show-offs" instead of a "show of force." This reputation was quickly buried during the Neighpon Liberation Campaign.. unfortunately, along side the graves of many brave Roaman Legionis.
Roam uses the ship prefix "RNS" for Roaman Naval Ship. They do not use a hull classification system at all, and instead, ships are assigned Dock Numbers that are only ever used on internal reports, and not as an official part of a ship's designation (Equestria, by comparison, would list a ship like "HMS Canterlot, CA-01").

Compared to the Germane battleships, the Roaman battlecruisers are lighter, much faster (the fastest vessels in the NEIGHTO combined fleet) and both more nimble.. and prettier. A design flaw of the vessel has two of its main gun turrets amidships, instead of fore-and-aft as with the other NEIGHTO partners. While this does limit its ability to bring its full weight-of-shell against an enemy vessel, when it CAN, it has 16 total naval rifles it can fire, giving it an unexpectedly impressive broadside with an equally impressive range, for such a light caliber.

Fast and light, the Protected Cruisers of the Roaman fleet may have a light gun, but they can fire fast, and from a decently good range. Their high speed allows them to get OUT of trouble as fast as they get INTO it, too, allowing for excellent hit-and-run strikes.

The "hot rods" of the Roaman fleet, the lightly armed Province-class Scout Cruisers have no torpedo armament, and only a light gun armament, but again, benefit from a high rate of fire. Mostly suited to its scouting role, with some capability of fighting light vessels, the Province-class ships are considered "unprotected cruisers" as they don't have armor specifically to guard its engine and magazine spaces, just the standard deck and side armor.

Roam's primary torpedo delivery system, the Comune-class Destroyers boast an impressive 12 torpedo spread, and a very high speed, allowing them to get in close, fast, launch, and withdraw before most peer enemy vessels can track them with their guns. The 480mm R1 torpedo is very fast, at 51 knots.

Recognizing that their battlecruisers were very limited, and needing a Carrier platform, the Roaman Navy modified Ceasar and Rex into Aircraft Carriers. The modification was simple enough - shave off the top, add a flight deck with elevators, empty out the first superstructure deck level, reuse the former Barbettes as munitions and fuel elevators from deeper in the ship, replace the older engines with faster and more powerful ones, and remove a layer of internal armor belt to save some weight. The result is these.

The modern fast battleship of the Roaman fleet, the Imperio-class ships are as refined as the Rainbow of Light-class and, while the armament is lighter, the guns have similar range. The Roaman 127mm dual purpose gun has very good range, and has a proximity fuse bursting charge for use against aircraft. Its armor is as thick or thicker than the Rainbow of Light-class, and it has a better turning radius, owing to its Double Reduction Geared Turbines. All ships of this class come outfitted to be used as Flagships, and have rather impressive dining facilities for official functions.

The true, modern Heavy Cruisers of the Roaman Navy, these are named for ancient Roaman heroes. With potent 8.5-inch guns for taking on ships, a compliment of scout planes, and a decent amount of boats to support a landing operation, the Condotti-class Cruisers are true modern Heavy Cruisers in every regard. The hullform is the same as the Regioni-class, only longer, and with more internal reinforcements, and some additional armor.

Faster and slightly tougher with some armor plate reinforcement over certain areas, the Regioni-class was reclassified as a Light Cruiser, and given significant AAA assets, and a more powerful main gun. It still hasn't the staying power of a true Heavy Cruiser, however, and still lacks torpedoes. It is, however, much more adept at taking out peer and inferior ship types, showing some of the evolution of the Roaman fleet.

The need to protect against aircraft was felt before Tirek's first attempts to strike naval assets, and the Roaman fleet - after developing an aircraft carrier - realzied this. So, the Province-class scout cruisers were modified into AAA/Force Protection Cruisers, complete with the Roaman anti-submarine mortar system, and the addition of a hefty torpedo armament. The Leonardo GST is a copy of the Equestrian GST, the data package shared freely due to the war. The "Riccio" (Hedgehog) ASW Mortar is unique in that it only explodes when it comes in contact with a Submarine, unlike a depth charge, which explodes at a pre-set depth.

Refined as well, the Roaman destroyers now present a threat to submarines, and aircraft. With their new engines, they have a bit more speed as well, and boast a 12% tighter turning radius than before. This allows them to strike with their impressive torpedo armament, or conduct a high speed run of ASW Mortar Fire against a sonar contact, ensuring a wide spread of munitions.

Upgraded with anti-sub and anti-air weapons, these Corvettes have better striking power overall. They make dandy guardians for fleets in harbor, and close to shore. They still have a short transit range, and even with the upgraded engines, lack stamina, but are more nimble.

Vaguley based on the Italian cruisers, these relatitvely heavily armrored landing ships formed the backbone of the Italian transport fleet until the introduction of the larger Regimental Landing Ships much later in the war. They were very handy for the Mareterranian Sea and nearby areas, but their slow speed made them difficult to bring along with larger fleet opertaions. Nopony could deny their thick armor made them very hard to damage, and resulted in fewer troop casualties, even standing up to magical blasts, thanks to the enchanted Silver Maple used to back the steel armor. This same Silver Maple was used to create the various Stradiverius instruments. Interestingly, this class was the only one to use the single barrel 127mm gun turret as it was originally designed.

So, while Princeps and Magnus Dux are technically half-sisters, they're all to the same design. While the carriers don't have defensive missiles, they have a thick AAA belt with 57mm radar-directed, computer-targeted guns, and 20mm Gatlings. They're still on the smaller size for aircraft carriers, and cramping was an issue, but their strike capability was considered very good, and use of deck park whenever possible, helped alleviate this issue to a degree, as did the smaller engine-turbine pack. The carriers were always paired, with two in each of the two Roaman fleets.

Now even better, the reformatted Impero-class Fast Battleships are still top rate vessels. Additions of long range surface and air seach radar gives the Battleship very long sight lines, and its 381mm guns actually have a 2nmi range advantage over the Equestrain 16"/50, which, combined with computerized gun laying, makes certain that even Tirek's heaviest units have to get through a thicker curtain of fire before they can even approach their own maximum gun range. Air defenses were updated, and the aircraft were swapped for Helicopters, giving the Battleships at least some means of defense against all threat types. The dining facilities were also upgraded.. with actual marble.

More or less the same weapons package as the Regioni-class, the Province-class Guided Missile Cruisers are designed for both Force Protection AND naval strike, with upgraded Melara 533mm Torpedoes, still capable of 51 knots, but now sonar-guided and with longer range - about 40km. Its ability to track sumbarines is limited, but it's incredibly good at tracking surface ships, even ones travelling at 30 knots, about the maximum speed of Tirek's vessels.

Also receiving another update, the modified Comune-class Guided Missile Destroyers have similar capabilities as the Cruisers, but fewer total weapons and less magazine space, but is no less able to defend against air, surface, and sub-surface threats. It has another set of Torpedoes, too, giving it even greater anti-ship ability, given the capabilies of the R3 Sonar-guided Torpedo. The upgrade was so effective, that a new Destroyer type based on a lengthened version of this hull was created to replace the Corvettes.

The new "Regimental Landing Ships" have enoguh carry capacity to transport a whole Brigade of troops, and land one full Regiment at a time, with purpose-built landing boats, artillery and mechanized carriers, pontoon craft, and more. Intended to be a singular answer to Roam's logistical transport needs, the ships can be specifically configured for each type of unit it's intended to transport, alloting extra spaces to mechanized equipment or heavy artillery pieces, as well as modular workshops to maintain the equipment while at sea. When transporting Legioni they can carry a lot of Special Mission Gear. There's also a specific installable module for the aft section that gives it a Helipad. Turn-around time for each modularity alteration can be as little as two weeks. With the rise of the Regimental Landing Ships, the older San Marco-class were reused as cargo carriers in convoys, where their thick armor afforded them some protection from enemy fire and torpedoes. The Regimental Landing Ships also have the exact same radar detection suite as all the other Roaman navy vessels, giving it the ability to detect threats all on its own, and help with the sensor net for the formation.
